A changing culture in L.A. County jails
Los Angeles County's jail system serves as a de facto mental health institution for thousands of inmates suffering from psychological and psychiatric problems. This video goes behind the scenes at Twin Towers, where the most severely disturbed inmates are held, and shows how culture change and legally-mandated reforms are playing out behind bars. It also takes a look at an innovative Sheriff’s Department crisis intervention training program for deputies who will be working with the mentally ill in custody.
The county has invested $125 million in reforms over the past three years, and the 2016-17 recommended budget calls for an additional $6.9 million for continued improvements.
