Nearly 3,000 participants—including government leaders from across the United States—are expected to take part in the National Association of Counties’ annual conference now underway in Long Beach. Check out this photo gallery for a look at some of the sights visitors will be seeing around town, as well as images of the behind-the-scenes activity as staffers prepare to welcome NACo to the nation’s most populous county.

Sessions are planned on topics ranging from the opioid epidemic to child sex trafficking to mental illness in jails. Speakers include Laker great-turned-writer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, swimmer and broadcaster Diana Nyad, and Jon Meacham, the presidential historian and author. More details are here.

By the time it wraps up on Monday, July 25, the NACo conference is expected to contribute between $5 million and $7 million to the local economy, said Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe, whose district is playing host to the event.
